A Small Introduction To The Florist
Many events prefer to use flowers. An example of these social functions include high school proms, church services, graduations, and and birthday parties. Flowers can be found almost everywhere, and yet there beauty remains priceless. Behind each beautiful bouquet, or single rose surrounded by baby’s breath in a vase, is a florist.
The simple act of giving a flower, whether it be store-bought or picked from a personal garden, can be traced back many centuries. There is no exact date recorded of when the first flower was exchanged as a symbol of emotion. None the less, flowers have been given for a very long time and are assumed to have been born from a tradition followed in pre-historic times.
There are records, however, of flowers and flower giving in the form of cave drawings, early Greek poetry, and various writings. These notations are what is considered to be the earliest known written records in human history. As time went on, most notably beginning in the year A. D. 4000, the simple act of giving a flower became a popular means of showing love and affection. This gesture lives on through the present.
Often times meanings are associated with a flower’s color. This practice is referred to as Floriography. While this is not new, it is not considered an ancient practice either. In general, most publications will state similar meanings to send flowers. For example, a red rose may be described to represent love in one pamphlet and romance in another. The overall meaning is the same.
Besides the act of giving flowers, people also took up the hobby of creating garlands, wreaths, and tiara’s. Wreaths and garlands can be credited to the Greeks. Another popular design which still remains in use today is the cornucopia. Frequently associated with Thanksgiving, this horn-shaped container was also made popular by the Greeks and used as a gift filled with fruit, vegetables, and flowers. The period in history known as the Middle Ages also had their hand in creating wreaths and garlands.
There are few things in life that stand the test of time. While freshly cut flowers may only display supple petals a certain amount of days in a vase, sending and receiving flowers never goes out of style. The appearance, coupled with the fragrance, makes receiving flowers a wonderful gift for the person who has everything. Sending flowers, for a special occasion or simply as a sign of appreciation, satisfies the sender almost as much as the receiver.
Floral traditions will be around for a long time to come. Furthermore, some people prefer to dry their flowers as keepsakes by drying them within the confines of a book. Using a book flattens the flower while the alternative, hanging them by the stem, keeps them in three-dimensional form.
Being a florist is not as easy as simply putting flowers in a vase. A lot of study and practice must be completed to be a quality floral provider. Not only do florists serve private people, they also provide arrangements to companies and celebrities. Truly understanding the meanings of flower colors, bouquet size, and water additives is just the beginning. Many in this line of work also study botany and gardening in addition to creating floral arrangements.
