Using The Correct Art Supplies To Begin A Profession In Visual Arts

Art Materials, including brushes, easels, canvases, art paper and all manner of charcoal, paints, crayons and pencils are important requirements to anyone planning a serious career in painting or drawing. Here are some artists supplies you can use in almost all types of visual arts.

Acrylic Paints are quick drying paint most commonly used in grattage and by hobbist for painting small figures or crafts. Acrylic paint is a pigment in an acrylic polymer emulsion. These can be diluted in water but becomes water-resistant when dried. Because of this they are also used by artists using water colours.

Oil Paints are slow drying paints and have been used in Europe since the 12th century for decoration and also as an artistic medium. They keep their colour brilliantly which is clearly exhibited in the frescoes and paintings of the Renaissance period. Oil paints are pigments suspended in oil. They take weeks to dry and therefore suit artists who are working on a painting either canvas or some material over several periods.

Gouache Paints are suspended in water. Similar to watercolour Gouache paints have larger particles and include chalk as the white pigment. Gouache Paints also known as Designers Gouache are opaque, dry fast and have a matt finish. Also known as an opaque watercolour.

Artist Brushes are varied in sizes, depending on its use. For fine artwork, it is recommended to use thin, art brushes. There are mainly three types of artist brushes: watercolour brushes which are made of sable or nylon, oil painting brushes which are made of sable or bristle, and acrylic brushes which are made of nylon. The handles are either made of wood or molded plastic and ferrules are either made of aluminum, nickle-plated steel or copper.

Paper is the practical medium on any kind of painting. It is advised that the paper for painting have a neutral PH level to keep the quality of the painting. One important thing to consider is to use a paper that is for the medium to be applied on. Some recommend papers are Arches Paper, French handmade paper, and Stonehenge Paper.
